Are peanuts capable of murder? Carolina Slade will bust this shell game.
Big money, big politics, crime, greed, and big farming - Slade, an agriculture department investigator in the steamy state of South Carolina, once again finds herself planted in a dangerous mystery.
Her assignment? Find out if there's a sinister connection between the drug-dealing arrest of wealthy peanut farmer Lamar Wheeler and the gruesome death of Lamar's teenage son in a car wreck. Especially since the dead teen is Governor Dick Wheeler's nephew.
Of course, the governor's people practically sky-write STAY AWAY FROM THE FIRST FAMILY over the Palmetto state's capitol dome in Columbia, which doesn't make Slade's job easier. Couldn't she simply back off from what appears to be a tragic and ugly - but private - family matter?
Not with hot-tempered DEA agent Pamela Largo on the case. Ex-wife to Senior Special Agent Wayne Largo, Slade's romantic interest, Pamela's hell-bent on using Lamar Wheeler's situation to re-open a cold case involving an Atlanta drug lord and Wayne's long lost sister, Kay.
Soon Slade's shoveling shooflies uphill against Pamela's obsessions, the drug lord's vendettas, the governor's secrets, and the bizarre realization that those secrets involve peanuts.

This novel starts off with a bang. Carolina Slade is thrust into an assignment which goes way beyond her usual bureaucratic duties at the Department of Agriculture, an assignment which involves illegal drugs, the governor's family, the VA hospital, and some really nasty people. This assignment is off-the record, and when Slade runs into unexpected, life-threatening complications, she finds that no one has her back. Meanwhile she is trying to raise two challenging teenagers, settle into her new home, and work things out with her love-interest, Wayne Largo. Enough about the plot--it's complicated with many levels. You'll just have to read the book.Author C. Hope Clark writes an offbeat thriller with fascinating characters. The pages crackle with energy, the heroine ever struggling to balance her job, her family, and her emotions. She doesn't like being told what to do, and repeatedly gets herself in hot water by challenging authority. She makes mistakes, any one of which could be fatal. Will Slade get out of this alive? Will she find the real bad guys before it's too late? Will Wayne make a commitment to her, or go back to his ex? Wait and see!
This is the third book in the Carolina Slade series and in my opinion the best. Author Clark is maturing as an author, her writing becoming more complex, deeper and richer. Her characters are more lifelike, her plots more intriguing. You would never figure out where this one was going without knowing in advance, but in the end it all makes sense. Looking for an unusual thriller with a South Carolina setting and a marvelous cast of characters, this is one novel you need to get hold of. I recommend it highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

Palmetto Poison (Audible Audio Edition) C Hope Clark Pyper Down Bell Bridge Books Books Reviews
I really enjoyed reading this book. There was enough action and questions to be very interesting but not overwhelming.
slade gets sucked into investigating something unofficially at the request of her boss. This of course leads to danger.
I don't want to give anything away but I will say most loose ends are tied up.
I have 4 stars because for me it was slightly confusing when references were made to past cases. I found myself wanting more info. Perhaps this was a marketing plot -)
I think C. Hope Clark gets better and better each time she publishes. I won't dwell on plotlines, because I want to note that there is more attention to the character and personality of the folks that populate this novel. I didn't even remember that Slade had a sister, but now I feel that I know her pretty well. I learned more about the dynamics of her family and relationships in this novel that I had before. Not all of it is positive (i.e. the depiction of her mother's meddling), but isn't that the way real families are? There is also enough action and adventure in this book to keep us reading until late in the night. Wayne is becoming more real to me too, and I am beginning to understand Slade's doggedness when she is working her cases. Clark also chose a slick way to round out the character of Pamela, Wayne's ex-wife and then effectively get rid of her too. Well done. I can't wait for the next novel!
I rarely give a 5 star review, so don’t let the 4star rating throw you. This is a great read. It takes a bit to get rolling, but the twists and turns at the end will keep you on edge. The only detraction I have, if any, is the self deprecating nature of the lead character, Carolina Slade. Some times, I found my self so disgusted with her double mindedness I set the book down and walked away. Sometimes she really pissed me off. All in all, a great plot line.
I both love and hate this book. I give it 5 stars for all the same reasons I listed in my previous reviews for this series. Un-put-down-able. Even when it's not the first read. I wish I could express how rare that is, but I find no words. I hate it because it appears to be the end of the Slade stories. If you are just discovering this series, read it slow and feel my envy.
UPDATE 4/21/17 I have it on very good authority that there is another Slade book in the works -- so I take back every "h" word! I don't know when, but my alerts are set and I am waiting to see what's next.
Palmetto Poison by C. Hope Clark is the first Carolina Slade mystery I’ve read. Clark has created a very interesting and believable character in Slade, as she prefers to be called. She feels real--fallible, prone to doubting herself one day and overconfident the next, courageous, principled, volatile, and much more. I also like the way the author gives smatterings of backstory throughout in a natural way that helped me understand some of Slade’s actions and attitudes at points in the story when I wanted to talk some sense into her!
Palmetto Poison is peopled with other fascinating characters, too, and I loved the picturesque setting. Several completely relevant and interrelated subplots, all with people the author made me care about, added interest. The tension kept ratcheting up, and kept me turning the pages (if you can call it that on a ) and the ending surprised me.
Palmetto Poison is a great combination of suspenseful mystery, real-life drama, and humor.
. . . involving peanut farmers, arrests for drugs, state governor’s meddling, complex relationships with her boss and her boss’s underlings, all inserted into an explosive set of relationships among two bitter rival families raising peanuts, a hot-tempered DEA agent formerly married to Slade’s lover Wayne Largo, and Wayne’s long-lost one-time-addicted sister Kay. Put the showdown in a nudist resort, and things get pretty spicy.
I gave this 5 stars because it's a great who-dunnit with lots of adventure. I'm more of a Callie-fan (referring to the author's other series Edisto Mysteries), and Carolina holds back emotionally a bit much for my taste but this is a fun read full of entertaining characters and unconventional circumstances. Plotting was terrific, writing was as good as C. Hope Clark ALWAYS is so this is money well spent. If you like Low Country Mysteries, you should try out Clark's other series--my favorite.
